About us...The Cyprus Gliding Group was established in the beginning of 2012.
The founders were members of the Crusaders Gliding Club based at Kingsfield Aerodrome Dhekelia. Due to projected increases in traffic and changes in approach procedures at Larnaca Airport the club had to close following a request from the Department of Civil Aviation. The club attracted members of all Cypriot communities and by the time it was shut down at the end of February 2012 it had half a dozen Greek Cypriot and half a dozen Turkish Cypriot members. A group of members took the challenging step of buying three aircraft and the ground equipment and formed the Cyprus Gliding Group. They managed to find a suitable site at Mammari and after extended discussions with officialdom set up with a dirt runway 600 meters long to operate from. The members themselves built an enclosed hanger next to the runway. This new site being further inland offers more favourable meteorological conditions for gliding . The Cyprus Gliding Group operates to British Gliding Association standards both for training and aircraft maintenance. Visitors are welcome and are offered the opportunity of flying in a glider or motor glider. |
